The Bishop’s Close Garden at Elk Rock

11800 S.W. Military Lane, Portland

Possibly the oldest, private estate garden in the Pacific Northwest. Started in 1893 by Peter Kerr who lived there until his death in 1957. On a difficult 13-acre site (thin soil, limited sunshine), it was initially used for recreation (golf, tennis) by its bachelor residents, as well as a smallholding with vegetables, fruit trees and animals. Later a private family refuge.

How Many Acres: Originally almost 13; now 9

Must See Highlights: A garden for walking, which draws the visitor through the property, along a stream, under mature magnolias, to several views of the Willamette River, Elk Rock Island and Mt. Hood.  A garden with “good bones” it is strongest in winter, spring, fall.

Admission Details: Free but donations very welcome (box in visitor shelter)

A place of respite, privacy, contemplation. Open Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00pm. Visitors may feel they “have the garden to themselves.”
